A Texas lawmaker who introduced a bill to eliminate the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department now says he does not intend to move it forward.

Republican State Rep. Pat Curry of Waco issued a statement saying the bill was meant to “shine a light” on the agency and was not intended for passage. Curry said his goal was to bring department commissioners to the negotiating table over proposed regulations on the deer breeding industry, which he said have drawn dozens of complaints from his constituents.

Curry also clarified that he is not a licensed deer breeder himself.
