In Wise County, they're spending an estimated $13 million to restore a major landmark.

The historic Wise County Courthouse in downtown Decatur dates back to 1896. Right now, its windows are boarded up and a chain-link fence surrounds it. That's because work is ongoing to fully restore the landmark.

Decatur City Manager Nate Mara says the total investment is north of $13 million.

Officials say the restoration will return the courthouse to the way it looked when it first opened 128 years ago, while adding modern technology to suit the needs of today.

While the work is ongoing, county offices are functioning in annexes and temporary buildings.
