Chris Seay is the pastor of Ecclesia church in Houston. He says they have pitched out after every flooding event in recent times, which happens often enough in Southeast Texas.
They are used to getting humidifiers to residents to dry out their homes and repairing and replacing sheetrock. This event, however, is different. The flooding from last week's winter storm comes from burst pipes Seay says they are flying in plumbers from as far away as Puerto Rico. "The plumbing supplies are also an issue. I'm on my way back from Alabama with a truckload of supplies that are impossible to find in Houston."
The plan is for them to keep helping until they're no longer needed. "If I was guessing, I think we've got a month or more of repairs to do. As is often the case the poor are usually the last to get help. What we want to do is bring in some folks to serve in the under served communities."
He says after a flood, they get help from all over Texas. This time the whole state was hit hard. "Texans take care of each other and we've endured a lot. I know we will get through this. We just want to remember to look out, especially in a pandemic year for the elderly, for people who might be ignored in the midst of this. Check on your neighbors, check on your friends."
The church is paying for all repairs and church maintenance workers are now fixing homes.
