This week's forecast for North Texas includes rain that could accumulate 2-3 inches in some drought-stricken areas.
The timing coincides with Flood Safety Awareness Week.
On Ask the Expert, KRLD Chief Meteorologist Dan Brounoff joined the KRLD Afternoon News to discuss some of the key preparedness tips.
Dan recommended a few things to avoid being swept away by rushing water.
First, TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN. He said if you can't see the lane divider on a road full of water, it's likely too deep to travel on.
Second, get to know the area. Get to know the steams, creeks and rivers during your normal routine and plan for an alternate route if necessary.
Lastly, avoid driving at night during high water conditions. Brounoff said that is the most dangerous time to drive during rainy conditions.
He said most people have the, "It won't happen to me" mentality... until it does. Don't get caught off guard.
