Building heat and increasing wind towards the weekend

Building heat and increasing wind towards the weekend

Good morning, everyone! Meteorologist Dan Brounoff here in the KRLD Weather Center.

Summer is officially here, and it's about to start feeling like it for the rest of this week, through the weekend, and likely for much of next week—and probably the next two and a half months.

We're waking up to mostly clear skies, humid conditions, and temperatures generally between 75° and 80°. Radar is quiet across North Texas this morning.

I am keeping an eye on a cluster of thunderstorms across western Kansas and the eastern Texas Panhandle. Those storms will dive southeast through the day and could clip some of our northern counties later this afternoon, especially areas from Gainesville east toward Sherman, Denison, and the Texoma region. Most locations across North Texas should remain dry, but a few storms may brush our far northern counties.

The bigger weather story is the strengthening ridge of high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere. This ridge is expanding eastward from the Desert Southwest and West Texas, where heat advisories are already in effect. While New Mexico and parts of the Texas Panhandle will continue to see occasional showers and thunderstorms along the edge of the ridge, much of Texas will remain under sinking air.

When air sinks beneath a high-pressure system, it compresses and warms, leading to hotter temperatures and fewer rain chances.

High temperatures today and tomorrow will remain in the mid-90s, which is only slightly above average for late June. By Friday and Saturday, however, temperatures will climb into the upper 90s, with many areas pushing 100 degrees by Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

When you factor in the humidity, it will feel 5 to 7 degrees hotter, and we may begin flirting with Heat Advisory criteria across portions of North Texas by this weekend and early next week.

Another thing to watch will be the wind. South winds will continue to increase, with gusts frequently exceeding 35 mph this weekend. A few locations could even see gusts approaching 40 mph at times.

If you're planning to spend time on area lakes:

  • -Wear a life jacket while boating.
  • -Stay hydrated.
  • -Apply plenty of sunscreen.
  • -Wear a hat and lightweight clothing.
  • -Watch for rough water and whitecaps as conditions become increasingly choppy through the weekend and into next week.

Welcome to the first full week of summer, ladies and gentlemen. Have fun, stay safe, and enjoy the weather when you can—it's the only weather you've got!

— Dan the Weatherman
