Building Heat & Strong Winds Grip North Texas

Building Heat & Strong Winds Grip North Texas

Building heat, tropical humidity, increasing winds, and very little rainfall. Those are our main weather stories as we work through the next seven days across North Texas.

Good morning and welcome to almost Friday! I'm Meteorologist Dan Brounoff in the KRLD Weather Center.

What you feel this morning is pretty much what you're going to get through the remainder of June. We do have a very slight chance of a late evening shower or thunderstorm today as a disturbance moves out of the Texas Panhandle however, any storms that develop will likely run into a strong cap and weaken as they approach North Texas after about 7:00 or 8:00 PM. That is essentially our only rain chance for at least the next week.

This upper-level ridge of high pressure means business. Underneath a ridge, air sinks, compresses, and heats up, leading to hotter temperatures and fewer opportunities for rainfall.

One thing working in our favor will be the wind. South winds will gust to around 30 mph today and Friday, increase to 35 mph on Saturday, and could reach 40 mph on Sunday. Those winds will provide some relief, especially in shaded areas, and you'll definitely notice the evaporative cooling effect after getting out of the pool.

All joking aside, this heat can be dangerous.

Heat Safety Tips:

  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
  • Take frequent breaks if you're working outdoors.
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Use sunscreen and wear a hat.
  • Make sure pets have a cool place to stay during the hottest part of the day.
  • Always check your back seat before leaving your vehicle. Children and pets should never be left in a parked car, even for a short time.

There are no significant changes in the forecast through next week. Afternoon highs will generally remain in the mid to upper 90s, with locations west of Interstate 35W likely topping 100 degrees, especially late this weekend and early next week.

Looking farther ahead, there may be a pattern change as we approach the 4th of July weekend. While it's still about 10 days away, I'm keeping an eye on the Gulf. Some forecast guidance suggests a system near Florida could retrograde westward, potentially increasing rain and thunderstorm chances across the eastern third of Texas around the holiday weekend.

That's still a long way off, but it's something we'll continue to monitor.

Have a great Thursday and enjoy the weather when you can—it's the only weather you've got!
