Monday is the coldest morning in North Texas since last February. Temperatures fell into the upper teens to low 20s with wind chills in the single digits. There's even a winter storm on our hands, starting late Wednesday evening through late Thursday night.
Temperatures will only warm into the mid to upper 30s on Monday, but the sun will be out.
The wind will relax Monday night, but it's going to be cold again. Morning lows will dip into the upper teens to low 20s with increasing clouds.
There will be more clouds than sun on Tuesday with highs in the mid to upper 30s again. At least the wind will have died down.
Things slowly start to change on Wednesday, as clouds increase keeping the temperatures in the mid-30s for highs. Morning lows will once again be down into the 20s.
By Wednesday evening, precipitation will start showing up on radar to the southwest and head our direction overnight and through the day on Thursday. Initially, this precipitation that starts to fall late Wednesday into early Thursday morning will evaporate before reaching the ground. Eventually, widespread snow, reaching the ground, will cross the area from southwest to northeast through the day. Temperatures will struggle to hit the freezing mark.
There will be accumulating snow across much of North Texas. There will be a wintry mix, (freezing rain, sleet, and snow) for areas south and east of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. All rain will fall south of a Lufkin to San Antonio to Del Rio line.
Accumulations
It's still way too early to talk about accumulation across North Texas. It's almost a guarantee now that everybody will see measurable snow. I will have my best guesstimate on Wednesday and especially Thursday morning when I see radar trends. You will have ample time to get last minute things done before you hunker down at home for 36 to 48 hours. Brief melting will take place Friday afternoon , but rapid melting will happen this weekend as we get back into the mid to upper 40s for highs.
Roads
Road conditions will be a mess when you wake up Thursday morning and will remain that way until about 12 p.m. on Friday. There will be some melting with slushy roadways by then. Anything that doesn't evaporate on the roads on Friday, will refreeze quickly into Saturday morning. By 12 p.m. Saturday, you will be free to move about the cabin.
Please make sure your pets have a warm place to stay through this winter weather event. I have a feeling, January will be a very cold month.
ERCOT has also issued a Weather Watch from January 6 to the 10th as the cold prompts higher electrical demand, and the potential for lower reserves. Though there is no electrical emergency and grid conditions are normal at this time, ERCOT says they will be monitoring and "will deploy all available tools to manage the grid, continuing a reliability-first approach to operations,"
