Flooding today; Sun, heat and humidity this weekend

Good morning everyone, and welcome to Friday!

It's going to be a wet and stormy morning across all of North Texas before this area of showers and thunderstorms gradually shifts south and east of the Metroplex by mid to late morning. While the overall severe weather threat remains low, flash flooding is the primary concern, along with frequent lightning and gusty winds up to 50 mph.

I know many of you may have the day off today, but the weather has other plans for me. I've been tracking this system since it developed west of North Texas earlier this morning. It's moving slowly, which allows periods of heavy rainfall to persist across portions of the region. Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible in the heavier bands, which could lead to localized flooding of streets, low-water crossings, and poor drainage areas.

Temperatures are hovering in the upper 70s to lower 80s this morning and will likely struggle to get out of the 80s this afternoon as clouds and rain continue to linger. Even after the main rain shield moves away, I can't completely rule out an isolated shower or thunderstorm later today.

The weekend will bring a return to typical North Texas summer weather. Heat and humidity will dominate with afternoon highs reaching the lower 90s Saturday and the middle 90s Sunday. Heat index values will approach 105 degrees, especially on Sunday.

Looking ahead, the ridge of high pressure that briefly builds over the area this weekend will shift westward early next week. This will allow a northwesterly flow pattern to develop in the upper atmosphere. As I mentioned yesterday, thunderstorms are expected to form across eastern Colorado and western Kansas during the afternoon hours Monday, Tuesday, and possibly Wednesday. Some of these storms may organize into larger complexes and move southeast into North Texas during the overnight and morning hours Tuesday, Wednesday, and perhaps Thursday.

It's still far too early to determine exactly how much rain we'll receive or which parts of North Texas will be impacted the most, but it's definitely something I'll be watching closely over the coming days.

Afternoon highs early next week should remain near seasonal levels in the lower 90s, with morning lows in the mid to upper 70s. Despite the temperatures being close to normal, the humidity will keep heat index values above 100 degrees each afternoon.

Have a great weekend, stay weather aware this morning, and enjoy the weather when you can—it's the only weather you've got!
