UPDATE: 9:00AM
Tropical Storm Nicholas is centered right over downtown Houston at 9am Tuesday morning. It did become a brief CAT 1 hurricane as it made landfall earlier this morning along the upper Texas coast, just east of Matagorda Bay. Peak wind reached 75mph, but there were some gusts over 80mph. Matagorda Bay measured a gust to 94mph! A 62mph gust was felt in Galveston, 60mph gust in Pearland, and a 58mph gust was measured at Hobby.

Average rainfal totals were in the 4"-6" range in the Houston metro area. Lighter totals to the north and west, heavier totals to the south and east. The highest total I could find was on Galveston Island around Pirate Beach, where almost 14" rain fell.
T.S. Nicholas will continue to weaken through the day and will be downgraded to a Tropical Depression later today. The flooding rain is over for the Houston Metro area, but reisdents across the Golden Triangle and southern Louisiana will experience very heavy rain through the day, An additional 4"-8" of rain will fall.
---------------------------------------------------
Tropical Storm Nicholas became a brief CAT 1 hurricane as it made landfall earlier this morning along the upper Texas coast, just southwest of Houston. Wind reached 75mph.
Nicholas is now a strong tropical storm with wind at 70mph as of 4:00 a.m. this morning. It's moving very slowly to the northeast and will continue doing so through the day.
Nicholas is a very lopsided storm with all the precipitation on the north and east side of the center of circulation. The flooding rains will stay out of Houston, but will inundate Beaumont/Port Arthur into southwest Louisiana through the day.
We may see a few afternoon and evening showers and storms across DFW later today, but they will quickly wane after sunset.
