High pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere continues to dominate our weather across North Texas. We've now had 67 consecutive days without measurable rain at DFW Airport, and we're over 50 triple-digit temperatures for the year. That puts us sixth all-time, while the lack of rainfall ranks among the top three longest dry stretches on record.
Unfortunately, the dry conditions look likely to continue through the rest of the week and most of the weekend.
Good morning, everyone! I hope your Tuesday is off to a great start. We're about halfway through the workweek. Temperatures are starting out near 80 degrees again this morning, which seems to be where we've been every morning lately. This afternoon, we'll be right around 100 degrees.
The record high for today is 102 degrees. We'll come close, but I don't think we'll break it.
We also have a Heat Advisory in effect this afternoon, along with very high grass fire danger, especially along and west of Interstate 35W.
There's also a significant wildfire burning in Bosque County, southwest of Fort Worth. The Hydra Fire has burned roughly 1,000 acres and was only about 10% contained as of last night. The fire has threatened the town of Meridian, with evacuations underway last night. Please be especially careful with anything that could spark a grass or brush fire.
If you're working outdoors today, stay hydrated and take frequent breaks.
Unfortunately, there is still no real relief from the heat in sight. We could be looking at another Heat Advisory on Thursday, with highs in the upper 90s. Those upper 90s are likely to stick around Friday through the weekend as well.
Rain chances may increase slightly late Sunday into Monday as a weak cold front tries to slide through the area, along with a disturbance moving in from the west. At this point, it doesn't look like a widespread rain event, but it's something I'll continue to monitor closely because our drought situation continues to worsen every day we go without measurable rainfall.
The front could bring slightly cooler temperatures, but the cooldown will be brief, with highs returning to the low to mid-90s next Monday and Tuesday. There could be a few lingering showers and thunderstorms Monday.
Fall officially begins Tuesday, but unfortunately, it won't feel much like fall around here just yet.
