Near-record rainfall fell yesterday at DFW Airport, with 2.31 inches measured. That put a significant dent in our rainfall deficit for the year, leaving us less than an inch and a half below average for this point in the year. The good news is I still have more rain in my 7-day forecast, with off-and-on chances continuing through the weekend.
Good morning! I hope you have a great commute into work today. Temperatures are hovering near 70 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. Radar is quiet, so I'm expecting a dry drive into work this morning.
Temperatures will be a little cooler today than yesterday's high of 96 degrees, with afternoon highs topping out around 90 degrees. Rain chances will also be lower, with only about a 20% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms during the late afternoon and early evening. Any storms that develop should diminish shortly after sunset.
Tomorrow, additional Gulf moisture will move into the area along with an upper-level disturbance. This will increase rain and storm coverage to around 30% to 40%, mainly during the late afternoon and evening hours. Small hail, gusty winds, and frequent lightning will be the primary hazards. A similar pattern is expected on Friday, with afternoon highs remaining near 90 degrees.
Looking ahead to the weekend, most of Saturday appears to be in good shape with highs around 90 degrees. However, a larger area of rain and thunderstorms is expected to approach from the west by late Saturday afternoon and evening, especially overnight into Sunday morning. It's still too early to determine how well this system will hold together as it moves into North Texas. If it remains organized, some locations could be awakened by thunderstorms before daybreak Sunday.
Current projections suggest the storms should move east of Dallas by mid-morning Sunday, leaving much of the remainder of the day in decent shape with only isolated afternoon storms possible. High temperatures Sunday will stay in the upper 80s.
Early next week, a few leftover showers and storms remain possible Monday afternoon and evening, but rain chances appear low. After that, high pressure in the upper atmosphere is expected to build back into the region from Tuesday through the end of next week.
That means temperatures will be climbing once again. Because of the increased soil moisture from this week's rainfall, humidity levels will remain elevated, and heat index values could exceed 100 degrees during the afternoons.
One final reminder: be sure to dump out any standing water around your home. With all of this recent rainfall, mosquito populations are likely to increase significantly.
Have a great day, and enjoy the weather when you can—it's the only weather you've got!
