Critical to extreme fire weather conditions are expected across North Texas on Friday, with wind gusts up to 60 mph. It marks the most dangerous fire conditions in Dallas-Fort Worth in nearly 15 years.

A serious situation will unfold on Friday across the state, as the grass fire danger escalates in the afternoon. The combination of lack of rainfall, particularly west of Fort Worth, high native dormant grasses, wind gusts of 50-60 mph, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures creates the most dangerous fire weather conditions in almost 15 years.

The time frame of most concern will be between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. across North Texas when the strongest wind gusts are expected to occur. Relative humidity will plummet as temperatures warm to near 80 degrees. Although the wind will be strong overnight, gusts will be limited to 30 mph. A passing high-pressure system Friday night will bring cooler temperatures, with readings dropping into the upper 40s to low 50s.

A dry cold front will move into the area on Saturday, shifting winds to the northwest and maintaining the grass fire danger across North Texas. Wind gusts of up to 30 mph, combined with low humidity, will persist. Unfortunately, the wind shift will cause any ongoing fires to change direction and burn areas that have not been affected yet, posing significant challenges for emergency responders. The situation will be even more critical to the west and northwest of DFW. Afternoon highs will be cooler, with readings in the upper 60s. Similar conditions are expected on Sunday, with less wind.

Next week, a warming trend will commence, with afternoon highs returning to the 80s by Tuesday. The next cold front is expected to arrive on Wednesday, currently anticipated to be dry. Temperatures will cool off again, with highs in the 60s by mid-week.
