Get Ready for Rain: Stormy Weekend, Hot Next Week

Keep your umbrella handy on and off through noon Sunday as multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms move north across North Texas. A few storms could become severe, producing hail up to quarter size, wind gusts to 60 mph, frequent lightning, and heavy downpours.

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Friday! I'm Meteorologist Dan Brounoff.

We're waking up to showers across the eastern half of North Texas this morning. These showers are moving from south to north. While they aren't producing thunder or lightning, they may slow down your morning commute. Most of this activity should taper off by mid to late morning.

Additional showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop to our southwest this afternoon and move into the area later in the day and through the evening. These storms could produce the same hazards mentioned above: hail, gusty winds, frequent lightning, and heavy rainfall. Most of the activity should weaken and move out by midnight.

However, the unsettled weather pattern continues Saturday. More showers and storms are expected to develop Saturday morning, with additional activity forming Saturday afternoon and evening as an upper-level disturbance approaches from the west. As this disturbance lifts into southern Oklahoma late Saturday night, it is expected to generate another line of showers and thunderstorms west of the Metroplex.

That line will move through North Texas during the early morning hours Sunday and could wake some of you with claps of thunder, small hail, gusty winds, and periods of heavy rain. By around noon Sunday, most of the rain should be east of the area, allowing sunshine to return for the second half of the day.

High temperatures this weekend will generally remain in the 80s, though some locations that receive persistent rainfall may stay in the 70s.

Looking ahead to next week, high pressure will build into the region. As sinking air warms and compresses in the atmosphere, temperatures will climb back into the low to mid-90s each afternoon. Heat index values will approach 100° at times.

Have a great Friday, enjoy your weekend, and make the most of the weather when you can—it's the only weather you've got!
