Texas weather may be causing cracks in your foundation

Foundation cracking
Emily Jimenez, KRLD News

The excessive heat and lack of rain have caused a number of issues for Texans, and now there's another concern to add to the list. Owner of HFX Foundation Solutions, Aaron Lamb explained that the high temperatures and low moisture levels in the soil may be causing cracks in your foundation.

"We start to see our sheetrock cracks, we start to see cracks in brick, things of that nature that kind of tell us hey our houses are moving," said Lamb. "And they are."

While this can impact the structure of your home, Lamb said it can cause more problems than just that.

"It can affect your plumbing, it can affect the seals on your window which obviously allows more heat which raises cost," said Lamb.

So how does this get fixed? Lamb said the biggest cause of foundation swelling is the lack of moisture. So, investing in an irrigation system or even a specific foundation watering system can help prevent these issues during the hot summers.

"It can certainly help minimize some of that movement and help keep that moisture consistent," said Lamb.

He said he has seen houses that are dangerous but they are typically older.

"You see it of course a lot more in your wood structures, so your older homes," said Lamb.

If you notice a crack or are concerned about your foundation Lamb recommends getting a foundation expert out to your home for an evaluation. He also said it's important and encouraged to get a second opinion.
