This week we have a special takeover episode with LAMC and Nacional Records founder Tomas Cookman, and Mexican Hip Hop artist Niña Dioz who are both looking ahead to this year’s streaming festival.

Historically held in venues and stages throughout New York City, the 2021 Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) has gone virtual once again due to the ongoing pandemic with performances, workshops, and more scheduled for the week of Cinco de Mayo -- May 4 through 7.

Now in its twenty-second year, Tomas was thrilled to see the interest grow from 1,200 fans attending live shows and conversations in person to 10,000 registrants for last year’s first online version. This year they’re on track to possibly overtake the 20,000 mark, a testament to the “health and interest in music, and specifically the crazy world of music that could be a Rock, Hip Hop, Reggae, Electronica song,” he says, “but Latino is in there somehow as well too.”

While the aim is to highlight Latin artists of all genres, "enough people talk about pop songs," says Tomas. "We typically don't do too much of that because it's already well-represented in so many other places. When we started 22 years ago, Gloria Estefan was still big, Julio Iglesias could still sell out an arena and we thought that we needed something 'alternative' to that. There's just so much more out there."

Mexican rapper Niña Dioz (Carla Reyna) is one of many up-and-coming artists that Tomas has welcomed to this year's conference for showcase performances. After a few weeks of hearing songs from the new record Amor, Locura & Otros Vicios our Alternalido Artist Spotlight this week, Carla tells Canyon that the full project is a "concept album," started back in 2011 as a simple folder of lyrics featuring themes of "love, madness, and other vices."

Carla began creating music in Monterrey, Mexico in 2006 and moved to Mexico City after finding indie radio success with her first EP, Marcapasos. Crossing over into the U.S. market via SXSW, and finding a home away from home with L.A.'s SUBSUELO set, Carla now looks ahead to keeping the Hip-Hop en español momentum that was a major part of her musical upbringing moving forward full-speed.
