A man recently released from prison was arrested Tuesday for allegedly attempting to kidnap an eight-year-old boy outside of his home in Palmdale, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said.

The boy and his eight-year-old cousin were walking home from school in the 600 block of East Avenue P1 when a man approached, threw the boy over his shoulder and began walking away. LASD said the boy’s cousin followed, repeatedly telling the man to let him go as the victim kicked and screamed.

Those screams, Deputy Ronald Sneed said, are believed to have alerted the boy’s parents, who watched as the man put the boy down and walked into the garage of the home next door, where he is believed to have been staying after his prison release.

“They watched it all happen and called 911,” Sneed said. “Deputies were there in minutes and called out to the suspect who was still in the garage. He came out and was arrested.”

LASD identified the boy's abductor as Steffon Harris, who has been charged with kidnapped. Harris' bail is set at $50,000. There is no known motive for the attempted kidnapping.
