
A female mountain lion found in the Santa Monica Mountains became the 99th mountain captured for an ongoing study by the National Park Service.
The lion, named P-99, is a female that is believed to be two to three years-old, according the park officials on Instagram. She was captured on Sept. 8.
Park officials said she was named P-99 because was the 99th mountain lion to be captured.
“Since 2002, the National Park Service has been studying mountain lions in and around the Santa Monica Mountains to determine how they survive in a fragmented and urbanized environment,” park officials wrote on Instagram.
Scientists anesthetized P-99 and full lab work-up was performed, including collecting biological samples, conducting a physical exam and fitting her with a GPS radio collar.
Officials noted they are currently studying 13 mountain lions in the area using GPS collars.
