A broken pipe sent water pouring through the top floor of a Valley Village apartment building Friday, prompting a response from the Los Angeles Fire Department and displacing residents of four units.

The flooding occurred in a modern, four-story building in the 5400 block of Colfax Avenue, according to LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.

Crews redirected the water and worked to protect lower floors and building contents from further damage.

The fire department began receiving calls around 10:30 a.m. about water flowing in the North Hollywood area, Stewart said.

Only one of the 10 calls -- a 10:40 a.m. report of flooding at the apartment building on Colfax Avenue -- checked out, she said.

Fire crews located the broken pipe and "conducted dewatering operations," managing to limit damage to the four units stacked beneath the break, Stewart explained.

Those units were left uninhabitable, and the LAFD issued California SAVE (Supplying Aid to Victims of Emergency) gift cards to help affected residents with immediate needs. The $250 cards are part of a program from the California Fire Foundation.

The cause of the broken pipe was under investigation by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

No estimate of damage was immediately available.
