Federal prosecutors say a flight attendant had asked 28-year-old Vyvianna M. Quinonez to buckle her seat belt, stow her tray table and to wear her face mask during the plane's final descent. Prosecutors say Quinonez refused, then punched the flight attendant in the face. Part of the incident was captured on video by another passenger.

The flight attendant's left eye was bruised, she had a cut under her right eye and three of her teeth were chipped in the attack.

"The flight attendant who was assaulted was simply doing her job to ensure the safety of all passengers aboard the plane," said Randy Grossman, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of California. "We are not going to tolerate violence or interference with the flight crew and we will pursue criminal charges against those who break the law."

Sentencing for Quinonez has been set for March. Prosecutors are expected to recommend four months in prison followed by home confinement and a fine.
