Deputy shot and killed in Rancho Cucamonga, suspect injured after chase

A San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot on Monday, and the suspect led deputies on a pursuit that ended with a crash in Upland.

Deputies responded to the 12300 block of Hollyhock in Rancho Cucamonga at 12:37 p.m. after it was reported an “armed Hispanic male threatening a female,” according to the sheriff’s department.

When deputies arrived, the man shot at them, striking one of the deputies. That deputy was taken to the hospital, where he died.

The suspect took off on a motorcycle, prompting a pursuit on the 210 Freeway. The crash came to an end around 1:35 p.m. when the suspect crashed at Campus Avenue.

He was airlifted off the freeway by a medical chopper that landed on the freeway. Deputies said he is still alive.
