A fire ripped through a Los Angeles strip mall on Saturday, billowing smoke into a pet hotel and resulting in 17 cats being killed, as well as a firefighter being injured, according to local officials.
Brian Humphrey, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson, shared that more than 120 firefighters were dispatched to fight the fire.
The blaze was in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles and was reported by a passerby at 5:45 a.m., Humphrey said.
The department shared that firefighters were able to contain the blaze to a few structures, but smoke poured into the businesses that were next to those on fire.
Humphrey shared that one of those businesses was Cat Place LA, a pet hotel. Unfortunately, the smoke resulted in 17 feline casualties.
“Sadly, 17 cats perished at the scene. Two were rescued and saved,” Humphrey said.
He added that once the cats were discovered, firefighters attempted to revive them but were unsuccessful in their attempts.
The condition of the two cats who survived is unknown, but they were put in veterinary care.
The fire did not cause any injury to civilians, and the Los Angeles Fire Department is still investigating what caused the early morning blaze. Humphrey shared that the injured firefighter is expected to survive and was taken to a nearby hospital.
