Glendale Unified School District superintendent announces retirement

GLENDALE, Calif. (KNX) - Glendale Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Vivian Ekchian announced her retirement Tuesday night during the school district’s final board meeting of the year.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the students, families, and employees of Glendale Unified School District for the past four years,” she said in a statement. “Together, we successfully navigated the COVID-19 pandemic, improved health and wellness for students and employees, and expanded dynamic learning opportunities for every child.”

Dr. Ekchian has worked in public education for 38 years, according to the press release. She started her career with Los Angeles Unified School District where she held different leadership roles before becoming the first female and first Armenian-American Superintendent for Glendale Unified School District.

In 2022, she was named as the 2022-23 Los Angeles County Superintendent of the Year.

Dr. Ekchian’s last day will be June 30. Dr. Darneika Watson will serve as Interim Superintendent in the meantime.
