Calif. police-shooting suspect found, arrested in Arizona

BUCKEYE, ARIZ. (KNX) — The search for a man accused of opening fire on a police officer has come to a close in Arizona, where Juan Carlos Vazquez was found hiding out on Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The 38 -year-old Pacoima resident is accused of opening fire on a San Fernando Police Department officer on Little Tujunga Canyon road on Nov. 8, as a police pursuit involving Vazquez came to a close.

“At the end of November, utilizing law enforcement resources, Major Crimes Bureau detectives determined Vazquez was hiding out near Buckeye, Ariz,” LASD said in a statement.

Vazquez was found by detectives from the Buckeye Police Department, along with the Phoenix Area West Valley Federal Marshals team, traveling in a compact car with several other men on Tuesday.

“A tactical traffic stop was conducted and after a short standoff, Vazquez was taken into custody,” LASD continued, adding that an AR-15 style semi-automatic “Ghost” pistol was in found in his possession during the arrest.

Vazquez remains in custody in the Maricopa County Jail on a parole violation warrant and a fugitive from justice charge. He will remain in custody in Arizona pending extradition proceedings.

He will be transported back to L.A. County for booking and eventual filing of criminal charges for attempted murder of a peace officer, LASD said.
