Community members are working to save the LA Kings Valley Ice Center in Panorama City from demolition.
The rink is set to be demolished in May. A change.org petition was created to try to save the rink.
“Youth hockey in the San Fernando Valley is at risk,” a statement on the petition read. By demolishing this center, we are taking away the chance for countless children to develop vital life skills, make lifelong friendships, and build character in a healthy, active environment.”
KNX News’ Pete Demetriou spoke with residents who said they’re devastated to lose the rink.
“It's given us an instant family, and we're so sad that this might not be happening anymore,” Nicole, a mom whose son plays at the rink, said.
Elijah, who has been training at the rink, said the future for him and the sport he loves playing is bleak.
“I've been going to this rink almost since I started,” he said.
Katie, who skated at the rink as a child, was getting back into figure skating and feels the closure simply isn’t fair to the hundreds, if not thousands, of people who use the site.
“Honestly, here everyone's so sweet, and it's really sad that they're closing,” she said.
The petition has garnered 6,227 signatures as of Wednesday afternoon.
