VENICE, Calif. (KNX) – A man was arrested after police said he kicked a tiny Yorkie in Venice.

It happened on June 14 around 3:11 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.  The man, identified by police as 39-year-old Michael Langman, was booked for assault with a deadly weapon and animal cruelty.

Laura Rosenfeld told KNX News’ Emily Valdez she and her 15-year-old dog, Bart, were in front of their apartment on the Venice Boardwalk when a Langman approached him.

“(The man) didn't look like anyone you would look at once or twice, (and he) decided to kick my dog like a soccer ball,” she said.

Bart went flying into a street maintenance tractor. A firefighter rushed over to help the dog.

“The firefighter visiting from Texas with her son turned around and ran towards me, touched his chest and said, ‘he's not breathing,’ and she grabbed him from me and began CPR on his tiny little body,” Rosenfeld said.

She added that people in the neighborhood tackled Langman.

“The rest of the neighborhood had footage and took over tackling the guy and making sure that the police report was filed,” she said.

Police said that while Langman tried to escape, he “grabbed a glass bottle and struck a male victim on the head, causing injury.”

Rosenfeld said Bart has a traumatic brain injury and can’t walk. A GoFundMe was created to help with the dog’s medical bills.
