A man is in custody for allegedly fatally assaulting his roommate at their home in Long Beach, police said Tuesday.

Saleem Omom Smith, 46, of Long Beach was taken into custody Monday near the residence in the 1700 block of Magnolia Avenue, the Long Beach Police Department reported. Smith was booked on suspicion of murder and was held on $2 million bail, police said.

Smith allegedly fatally assaulted Marcus George, 50, at their Magnolia Avenue home on July 24, police said.

"Detectives believe George and Smith were roommates and involved in a dispute, which escalated into a fight and resulted in George's death," police said in a statement.

Officers went to the residence around 9:05 p.m. July 24 on a report that a man was unresponsive inside the location, police said.

George was discovered on the floor, suffering from injuries to his upper body, and he died at the scene, police said.

Detectives will present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for filing consideration later this week, police said.

Anyone with information about the case was urged to contact LBPD Homicide detectives Leticia Gamboa or Eric Thai at 562-570-7244. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
