A man was fatally shot by a deputy in Long Beach Tuesday night after authorities say he backed his car right on top of the sheriff’s car.
Around 9:20 p.m., L.A. County Sheriff’s deputies from the Lakewood station responded to a restraining order violation call on Indiana Avenue. While talking with the victim, deputies saw the suspect’s car driving by.
They followed him to the intersection of Artesia and Downey Avenue where a deputy pulled him over.
“As a deputy pulled in behind the suspect vehicle, the suspect placed his vehicle in reverse, deliberately accelerated, and crashed into the front end of the patrol unit,” according to the department.
Deputies said the suspect got out of his car with a knife and charged at the deputy, leading to the deputy-involved shooting.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. A deputy was taken to the hospital for injuries stemming from the collision.
The intersection of Artesia and Downey Avenue was closed off while deputies continued their investigation.
Anyone with information about this shooting was asked to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous calls can be made to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or sent to lacrimestoppers.org.
