An armed standoff on the 105 Freeway between California Highway Patrol and a wanted murder suspect left an officer wounded and the shooting suspect dead Tuesday morning.
Sometime after 8:30 a.m., the suspect’s car broke down on the westbound 105 Freeway ramp to the northbound 710 Freeway in the Paramount area.
The video above — obtained by KNX 1070 Newsradio — shows officers interacting with the suspect prior to the gunfire.
The suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire. Officers fired back, hitting the suspect. A bullet grazed an officer's head. First responders transported the officer and the suspect to a hospital.
The sheriff's department said the shooter – identified as 35-year-old Jesse Medrano – died at the hospital.
CHP said its initial investigation revealed the shooting suspect was wanted for murder. The LAPD said Medrano shot and killed a 61-year-old man and wounded two others during an altercation on E 92nd Street early Sunday morning. The LA County Sheriff's Department also responded to the shooting.
The shootout forced Highway Patrol to close the 105 Freeway in both directions. The onramp from Garfield Avenue to the northbound 710 Free was also closed for some time.
