A local non-profit is raising $1 million to buy and preserve a more than two-acre piece of land in Laurel Canyon.

The 2.4-acre parcel is located at the corner of Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Lookout Mountain Avenue.

Tony Tucci and Alison Simard are co-founders of Citizens for Los Angeles Wildlife or CLAW. In 2017, the non-profit and neighborhood organization, Laurel Canyon Association, purchased the “Let’s Buy A Mountain,” a 17-acre mountain ridge for open space and wildlife habitat.

Tucci told KNX News’ Margaret Carrero the land is vital to animals.

“This is an important connective habitat hub that helps get animals from all these other hubs of habitat across Laurel Canyon Boulevard,” he said.

Simard said they put up wildlife cameras and found a mountain lion was regularly in the area.

“This was part of his regular habitat along with bobcats and coyotes and deer,” she said.

The deadline to raise the $1 million is April 30. If they’re able to do it, Simard said the land will be turned over to the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority to own and manage as a park.
