The cities of Stanton and Orange are making changes to their parking enforcement as a way to make more money.

Both cities have reportedly partnered with a private company,  SP Plus Corporation, to enforce parking rules efficiently and guarantee more income. But the community response hasn’t been all roses.

“This would be a terrible precedent to look at citations as a way to basically tax residents to bring in money,” a Fullterton resident said during a city meeting, as reported by the Voice of O.C. “A for-profit entity will want to give as many tickets as possible to make money.”

Before hiring the same company in 2019, the city of Fullerton pulled in around $33,000 a month from parking tickets. As of March 2024, that number increased to $100,000 a month.

The Voice of O.C reported Stanton officials unanimously approved a one-year contract with the private company to enforce parking laws between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Stanton will continue to enforce its parking rules from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Officials in the city of Orange approved a $2.5 million five-year contract with the same private company in May.

Laguna Beach is taking a different approach to increase revenue: they’re increasing the cost of parking tickets instead. The city of Brea told its staff to resume street sweeping enforcement as a way to increase revenue.
