LISTEN NOW: Portugal. The Man find strength in doing things together
It’s been a tough year for the 42-year-old who opened up about the 2019 loss of the band’s "hype-man/MC,” Chris Black and how their recently-released album, Chris Black Changed My Life, honors him. On top of his grief journey surrounding Black, Gourley has been navigating his daughter’s recent neurodegenerative disease diagnosis.
Taking a break before taking the stage of Lollapalooza in Chicago, Gourley sat down with Audacy’s Julia and Bru and shared some of the techniques he’s been using to maintain a positive mental health space amidst it all.
“We did meditation and transcendental meditation for a while,” he said of the group’s team effort towards a positive mental health space. “I think just doing things as a group,” he said of one of the most helpful overall approaches.
“We’re a very family-centered band. Doing things as a group has been therapeutic for me, personally. It helps me. We try to be open and talk about things.”
Audacy's I’m Listening initiative aims to encourage those who are dealing with mental health issues to understand they are not alone.
