The Rancho Palos Verdes City Council formally asked Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency for the city Tuesday as landslides continue to damage the community.

KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian reported that many residents in the Seaview community said they don’t sleep when it rains because they’re worried.

“We are anxious, we're worried, and we don't know if our homes are going to be the next ones that are going to get red-tagged,” a community member said at the city council meeting. “Seaview’s residents deserve an immediate, actionable plan for remediation.”

The resident went on to say they require state and federal emergency funding to address the situation.

A local emergency declaration could open up federal resources for Ranchos Palos Verdes. But in the formal request, City Manager Ara Mihranian said funding isn’t the city’s primary concern.

“What we are asking at this point is to use his emergency powers by suspending or waiving state permitting requirements,” he said.

City leaders said the dire situation facing the community is unprecedented.
