LOS ANGELES (KNX) - A stolen vehicle pursuit ended in a crash on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway Tuesday afternoon, forcing a shutdown of the westbound highway.
Sergeant Gordon Helper told KNX News’ Emily Valdez that the chase started in downtown L.A., where a police task force was looking for robbery suspects who had hit jewelry stores in the area.
The Los Angeles Police Department said the officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle near Eighth and Olive streets at 2:32 p.m. An officer tried to pull the car over, but the driver took off, leading the police on a brief chase on the westbound 10 Freeway.
As the vehicle was approaching the Arlington Avenue underpass, the driver took a sharp right turn as if they were trying to exit, colliding with three or four cars in the process.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of stealing a vehicle. Police say they also found a gun in the stolen car. One person was hospitalized and is in stable condition.
All westbound lanes of the 10 Freeway were closed at Arlington, causing a miles-long backup as police worked to clear the scene and investigate the crash.
