Orange County’s new electric streetcar is 95 percent complete, with testing of the system now underway.

The service, which will connect Santa Ana and Garden Grove, was initially supposed to be up and running in 2021, but is now expected to begin taking riders in the summer if the testing goes smoothly.

Orange County Transportation Authority CEO Darrell Johnson said the service will be making 10 stops in each direction, operating four to six times an hour. It’s also expected to carry 5,000 riders per day.

“I think the benefit will accrue to the center of the county, but specifically downtown Santa Ana, Garden Grove, and people that are coming in on MetroLink and Amtrak into the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center, working in the Civic Center, as well as connecting with eight of our busiest bus routes and terminating at our busiest bus route on Harbor Boulevard in the city of Garden Grove,” he told KNX News’ Karen Adams. “So it really has a lot of opportunity to bring people right into the center of the county.”

The cost to ride is $2.
