The Super Bowl LIV halftime show, headlined by Shakira and Jennifer Lopez at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, was a celebration of the American dream and female empowerment, all with a Latin twist.

With surprise appearances from reggaeton superstars J Balvin and Bad Bunny, as well as Lopez’s 11-year-old daughter Emme, the performance managed to pay tribute not just to the meteoric careers of its Hispanic performers but to the unique culture of its host city.

From Shakira’s hip-shaking medley of her biggest hits kicking off the party to Jennifer Lopez’s energetic homage to her New York roots, here are the 6 best moments from the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show.

Bad Bunny Breaks Barriers

Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny, joined forces with Shakira for a salsa re-imagining of “Chantaje.” The Puerto Rican reggaeton star broke onto the Latin music scene in 2016 and collaborated with Drake on “Mia,” which peaked at the #1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 list in October of 2018, but his first foray into English-language music was on Cardi B’s “I Like It” with J Balvin.

J Balvin Brings the Heat

J Balvin made history as the first Latino artist to headline the Lolapalooza music festival, his 2017 song “Mi Gente” was so catchy that Beyoncé made an English-language remix of it, and he’s made a name for himself collaborating with some of the biggest names in reggaeton.

The Colombian artist performed “Que Calor” and “Mi Gente” with JLo, matching the diva’s energy as she breezed through a medley of her greatest hits.

Though they didn’t join forces this time around, it should be noted that Balvin and Bad Bunny recorded “Oasis,” an overnight surprise album that they dropped in June 2019 to critical acclaim.

The Dancers Light Up the Stage

Jennifer Lopez started her career as a dancer, crushing it as a Fly Girl on “In Living Color.” Even though she’s now moved into the movie star/pop diva/all-around icon sphere of the entertainment world, she was true to her roots and turned to a few of her “World of Dance” pals to show her passion for the art form. Dancers from Swing Latino flew in from Colombia to join Lopez’s performance, dancing on the same stage as their compatriot, Shakira.

Keeping It In the Family

A love of music runs in the family for Jennifer Lopez’s 11-year-old daughter, Emme. Her father, Marc Anthony, is a living legend in the salsa world, and the talent is clearly genetic. The pint-sized singer joined her mother onstage for a medley of “Let’s Get Loud” and “Born in The USA." She’s never performed for an audience this big, but Emme is no stranger to the stage- she sang “Limitless” with JLo in last year’s “It’s My Party” tour.

JLo’s a Hustler, Baby

Jennifer Lopez didn’t snag the Golden Globe for her role in “Hustlers” but that didn’t stop her from showing off her skills on the pole in her Super Bowl performance while singing “Waiting For Tonight” in a sparkly outfit.

The Dazzling Finale

Shakira is one of the most recognizable Spanish-language stars on the planet, and Jennifer Lopez has managed to conquer just about everything she’s set her mind to, so although we knew we were in for an unforgettable show, the two divas joining forces for “Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)” and “Let’s Get Loud” was still spellbinding.

JLo and Shakira made history as the first Latin headliners at the Super Bowl, with Lopez calling it “a very important moment” for the Latino community in the United States. In a press conference prior to the event, Shakira stated that the performance would act “as a reminder of the heritage of this country, which is one of diversity.”
