Scientists and seismologists said California is due for a big earthquake, according to research published March 22 in Frontiers in Earth Science.

Scientists and seismologists, including one from the University of California Berkeley, found that the San Andreas fault line in the city of Parkfield could see a major earthquake as soon as this year. The city is located about an hour north of San Luis Obispo.

The scientists said there’s strong activity on the fault line every 22 years. The last time one hit was in 2004. They said similar patterns strongly show another earthquake is coming.

The U.S. Geological Survey had previously predicted that a 6.7 magnitude earthquake would occur along the San Andreas fault in the next 30 years.
