Two passengers that were on the boat were able to escape.

People in the area told KNX News’ Jon Baird they heard explosions during the fire and saw fireworks go off while firefighters were trying to put out the blaze.

“I came down, I live here as well as work here, and it was on fire. It was really cooking,” one man said. “It burned for about two-and-a-half hours.”

The fire department wrote on X that the boat owner said there were 1000 rounds of unspent ammunition and fireworks onboard the board. Captain Sheila Kelliher, the department’s spokesperson, told Baird the ammunition did not discharge.

“It sounds like the fireworks were what were exploding,” she said.

The fire was knocked down at 10:33 p.m. and the boat was submerged in the water. As of early Thursday morning, environmental crews worked to contain the diesel.

“Diesel, typically once it's released, that's when it's as toxic as possible and then it starts to dissipate,” Lieutenant Commander Omar Borges with the Coast Guard told Baird.

It could take days to clean up the diesel.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
