The Padres put an end to their 4-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the White Sox on Sunday. Griffin Canning's debut provided reason for optimism, as he struck out 7 over 5 innings while yielding just one run on a solo homer to Drew Romo. After falling behind 1-0, Miguel Andujar blasted a solo homer in the bottom of the 4th to tie the game, Manny Machado followed suit with a solo home run of his own, and Xander Bogaerts scored from third on a passed ball to cap San Diego's 3-run 4th inning. The Padres would hold their 3-1 lead until the 7th inning, when Adrian Morejon returned to pitch his second inning after striking out the side in the 6th, and served up a 2-run game-tying home run to pinch-hitter Derek Hill. The Padres responded in the bottom of the 8th inning though, as Ramon Laureano drew a leadoff walk, stole third base, and then advanced to third base with two outs on Jackson Merrill's single. With two outs, Xander Bogaerts hit a swinging bunt down the left field line, allowing Laureano to race home and score from third, while Bogaerts reached safely to give the Padres a 4-3 lead. Mason Miller then entered in the 9th and closed out the game to earn his 11th save of the season. The Padres now hit the road for a quick 3-game series in San Francisco before returning home to face the Cardinals on Thursday.
