Saturday looked to be a promising game for the Padres, as they went up 3-1 thanks to solo home runs by Xander Bogaerts, Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr., who broke out of his season-long drought to hit his first long ball of the season. Michael King cruised through the first 6 innings on just 64 pitches, allowing only a solo home run to Drew Millas in the 3rd inning. But King had a nightmare 7th inning that ultimately led to a loss for the Padres. After CJ Abrams led off with a single, Jose Tena hit a grounder to Tatis Jr.'s left side, but made an errant throw to second base, putting two runners on with no outs. King then issued a walk to load the bases, and then hit Dylan Crews to bring home a run, making it a 3-2 game with the bases still loaded and no outs. Bradley Rodriguez then entered the game, and Drew Millas hit a sharp grounder to Fernando Tatis Jr., who threw it to second base, but Xander Bogaerts never touched the bag, so no out was recorded and the tying run scored. Pinch-hitter Curtis Mead then drew a walk with the bases loaded to give Washington the lead. After all the damage was done, the Nationals scored six runs in the 7th inning to take the lead and ultimately win 9-4 in a game that the Padres all but had in the bag. Griffin Canning will start Sunday's season finale.
