The Padres came from behind after trailing 3-0 to earn a hard-fought victory in 10 innings against the Reds on Monday night. Yu Darvish pitched well, striking out 7 over 5.2 innings of work, but he did allow 3 earned runs, two of which came via the long ball. But the Grit Squad didn't give up, and clawed their way back into the game. The Padres first run of the night came on an RBI-double from Gavin Sheets in the 6th inning. Jackson Merrill then brought Sheets and Ramon Laureano home to tie the game with a 2-run triple.
The Padres' elite bullpen held up their end of th3e bargain, as Alek Jacob, Jeremiah Estrada, Adrian Morejon, Mason Miller, Robert Suarez and Wandy Peralta combined for four scoreless innings. Suarez was particularly impressive, recording five crucial outs in the 9th and 10th innings without allowing a baserunner. The Padres took advantage of their leadoff runner in the bottom of the 10th after the Reds failed to score in the top of the 10th. Freddy Fermin laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Matt McLain wasn't able to hold on to the throw from Nick Martinez, putting runners at the corners with no outs for Fernando Tatis Jr. Tatis would hit a shallow sac-pop, allowing Jake Cronenworth to scamper home from third base for the game winning run. Michael King will make his return to the mound for the Padres on Tuesday afternoon.
