The Phillies claimed a series win over the Padres with an eye on a sweep with a win on Wednesday after defeating the Padres 4-3 on Tuesday evening. The Phillies' sluggers jumped all over Randy Vasquez, as Bryce Harper, JT Realmuto and Trea Turner all hit solo home runs over the first three innings. Alec Bohm added an insurance run with an RBI-single back up the middle to put the Padres in a 4-0 hole in the 3rd inning. Manny Machado cut the Padres' deficit in half with a 2-run homer in the 4th inning, which hopefully is the start of a hot streak for the struggling veteran. The Padres rallied in the bottom of the 8th with a chance to tie the game or take the lead. Ramon Laureano led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, making it a 4-3 game. Later in the inning, Fernando Tatis Jr. singled to right and Gavin Sheets drew a walk, putting the tying run in scoring position and the go-ahead run on the basepaths with two for Manny Machado. Unfortunately, Machado check-swung at the first pitch, hitting a slow dribbler to third base and was thrown out for the final out of the inning. Jhoan Duran retired the three batters he faced in order in the bottom of the 9th, as the Padres lost their third game in a row. They'll have a tough opponent on the mound in Cristopher Sanchez on Wednesday as they try to avoid being swept for the first time in 2026.
