Every day are new learning experiences for babies and toddlers and as they learn about their environment and how to communicate. But can they indeed see what is going on in the world? With 65% of the world's popular using some sort of corrective eye lenses, how can you tell if your baby or toddler need glasses? Doctors begin to evaluate our vision on newborns the day they're born, checking on their eyes to ensure there's no physical problem that would affect their vision. Vision tests are conducted on infants starting at six months and a comprehensive eye exam by an eye care professional should be scheduled by age one and repeated before kindergarten. But it is important to notice specific behaviors, or lack of behaviors, that prompt you to talk about it with your pediatrician. If your infant or toddlers eyes are not working in tandem or not aligning. Another sign of having a vision problem are social milestones. At 3 to 6 months, if your infant isn't imitating your smile as they look at you, it may be a sign their vision is not clear. Infants should also be able to make steady eye contact by about 3 months old, so if they aren't able to track items with their eyes, it may be an indicator of vision problems. It is worth a discussion with your pediatrician first to discuss the signs and treatment for your infant or toddler before schedule an eye exam. For some children, glasses are just to fix their vision. A lot of times it is about intervening with vision issues at a young age so they can decrease the dependency on glasses as children get older.
