We are told early in life that dialing 911 is used only for emergencies only and while what you consider an emergency may vary, dialing 911 to complain about your husband is not. 69-year old Sylvia Shumaker of Largo was arrested last week for misusing 911 by calling and texting the number to make non-criminal complaints about her husband. The police report states she used 911 multiple times via text and phone to ask for things like a counselor and how to file for divorce. When police showed up to arrest her around 1:50 Friday morning, they say she was "highly intoxicated." The state of Florida has classified Misuse of 911 as a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000 for the first four offenses. A felony misuse of 911 charge is punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
