
LAS VEGAS. NV (KXNT) - A fast moving fire heavily damaged one building and damaged the outside walls of two other buildings during a two-alarm fire at the Lantana Apartments Tuesday afternoon.
Fire dispatchers received several calls at 1:55 p.m. that smoke was coming from one of the buildings in the complex at Charleston and Rainbow
When the first engine arrived, the entire second floor of the two story wood frame building with eight apartments was fully involved. Within minutes the fire grew even more fierce. A second alarm was requested.
The fire was so intense, heat from the flames were starting to burn the outside walls of two nearby apartment buildings. Stiff winds were also fanning the flames. Firefighters were concerned the fire would spread to at least one of the other buildings.
Additional crews arrived on scene and was able to keep the fire confined to the building of origin. It took nearly an hour to bring the fire under control.
The fire caused major damage to the building 11, where the fire started. Fire investigators believe the fire started on an outside balcony of one of the second floor apartments, but the exact cause could not be determined.
The outside wall of two other buildings were also damage. Damage for the incident was estimated at $500,000.
A total of 30 fire units responded to the blaze with 75 fire personnel. Clark County firefighters also responded to the fire.
Fourteen adults and five children are displaced by the fire. One cat died. The American Red Cross is assisting.
There were no reported injuries.
