LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - Las Vegas' new slogan was announced on Sunday night, but it was a much more muted event than anticipated.
Events scheduled along the Strip for the rollout of the new slogan, "What Happens Here, Only Happens Here" were canceled after the death of basketball legend Kobe Bryant.
Bryant, his 13 year old daughter, and 7 others were killed in a helicopter crash north of Los Angeles on Sunday morning.
Instead of the simultaneous unveiling of the new slogan on signs up and down the Strip, a message was posted that read, "L.A.., Our Hearts Go Out To You #RIPKOBE"
In a statement released Sunday afternoon, Steve Hill, President of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, said
“In light of today’s tragic accident that claimed the lives of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and others on board, we are postponing any activity planned on the Las Vegas Strip until a future date. The hearts of everyone in Las Vegas are with the families and friends of those lost, with all of Los Angeles and with his fans around the world.”
A commercial with the new slogan did run during Sunday night's Grammy Awards, but only because it was too late to pull the ad from the broadcast.
An announcement of a new date for debuting the slogan is in the works.
