LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - It was a rocky start to the 2020 fall semester for the Clark County School District.
CCSD’s fall semester got underway Monday under a distance learning model due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The biggest concern going in was the number of students who don't have the technology available to them. The district estimates that close to 25,000 students don't have the Google Chromebooks that the district uses for their distance learning lessons.
Turns out the biggest issue was Canvas, the platform that the district is using for learning. So many students were logging on at the same time that the platform crashed.
Early Monday, the district tweeted out some problems parents, teachers, and students were already running into.
The problem wasn't unique to Las Vegas, with many other districts using Canvas reporting similar issues with signing on. Problems cleared up in the late morning.
Food distribution sites around town have increased. There are more than 300 food distribution sites operating valley-wide, up from just over 40, handing out breakfast and lunches to students. Students, though, need to meet free and reduced-price meal program eligibility in order to receive meals at no cost. To find locations, click here.
Even though students won’t be attending school in person for the time, school zone speed limits will be in effect at site set up for food distribution.
CCSD says the distance learning model will be revisited every 30 days.
