LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - Mired in a slump that has them in 5th place in the Pacific Division, the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday fired Head Coach Gerard Gallant.

Assistant Coach Mike Kelly was also relieved of his duties.

Former San Jose Sharks Head Coach Peter Deboer was named new head coach. DeBoer was fired from the Sharks last December. DeBoer has also been head coach in New Jersey and Florida.

Gallant is the only head coach in the Golden Knights' short history, guiding the team to an improbable run to the brink of the Stanley Cup three seasons ago.

Since then, the Knights were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs last season, and have been frustratingly inconsistent throughout the 2019-2020 campaign.

DeBoer will be behind the bench when the Golden Knights play at Ottawa on Thursday.
