An investigation by Las Vegas police into the disappearance of a woman over the New Year's holiday weekend has led to the arrest of her grandson.  Family members reported January 2 they had been unable to contact the woman since December 31. The investigation determined foul play was involved and the case was transferred to the LVMPD Homicide Section.

On January 5, the Nye County Sheriff’s Office located the body of the victim in a desert area in Amargosa Valley.  Homicide detectives identified the victim’s grandson, 29-year-old Matthew Ayala, as the suspect. Ayala was arrested in Las Vegas later that day and booked into the Clark County Detention Center for one count of Open Murder.
