LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - The man Metro Police say stabbed one of their K-9 officers will be released on his own recognizance while he awaits trial.

It all began after officers pulled over 57 year-old Jeffrey Holland for an outstanding traffic warrant near Twain and Cambidge on Tuesday night. Police say Holland got out of his car, brandished a knife and ran to a nearby apartment complex.

After spending some time in the of the units, police say Holland came out still holding the knife.

That's when Metro turned Kimura loose.

The 3-year-old Dutch Shepherd was stabbed several times in the neck while attempting to take Holland down. Kimura was taken to a veterinary surgery center at Tropicana and Durango for treatment and is expetced to make a full recovery following prescribed rehab work.

Holland, meanwhile, faces a multitude of charges that include resisting police with a deadly weapon (not a gun), torture/injure/poison/attempt to kill police animal, and operating a vehicle with expired registration. A judge ruled on Thursday that Holland can go free until his scheduled trial date in June.
