LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - The North Las Vegas City Council has agreed to get tough on landlords don't follow the moratorium on evictions ordered by Governor Steve Sisolak.

At their meeting on Wednesday, the council unanimously approved an ordinance that would penalize landlords and property managers who violate the governor's eviction moratorium.

The ordinance amends City Code to fine landlords and property managers up to $1,000 per day, revoke business permits or licenses or charge individuals with a misdemeanor.

According to a statement from the city, the charges extend to the point where individuals could face jail time for up to six months.

Gov. Sisolak announced a statewide eviction moratorium for Nevada on March 30 as a protection for thousands of Nevadans who either lost or where furloughed from their jobs following his order that all non-essential businesses be closed to help slow the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

That order remains in effect until at least April 30th.
